June 23, 2010: Five Police Officers Sue City of Newark, Newark Police Department, Director Garry McCarthy and others for racial discrimination.
Today, the law firm of Galex Wolf, LLC filed a Complaint on behalf of five Newark Police Officers, all of African American decent, alleging that the City of Newark, Newark Police Department, Director Garry McCarthy and other high ranking officers engaged in discriminatory conduct in violation of the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. The allegations stem from the five officers being detained without probable cause or suspicion for improperly working armed private security for Lil Wayne on March 19, 2009 at the Prudential Center in Newark. After the Plaintiffs were determined not to be working armed private security, Plaintiffs were then immediately suspended for violations of Newark Police Department procedures for improperly securing their weapons. Thereafter, Plaintiffs were subjected to malicious prosecution for allegedly violating Newark Police Department regulations. Additionally, Plaintiffs were subjected to numerous and continuous psychological evaluation in violations of the Newark Police Department’s regulations regarding same. All this conduct is in stark contrast to the treatment of Caucasian officers who a month prior were found to have been illegally and without proper permitting working armed private security at a function at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark wherein several civilians were shot. None of the Caucasian officers were immediately suspended or subject to repeated psychological evaluation.
